Tears seeped from beneath Laurel’s closed eyelids. Listening earth. Poor suffering earth. And she had hit it with her fist and blamed it for their misery. She had best be honest; she had blamed it for her misery.

At last—and it was still a night sky, not a sky heralding dawn—she went to sleep despite the occasional tremors, which had become milder and less frequent. When she awakened to aging morning, she lay still, listening, wondering what was wrong. Birds. Sparrows chirping. Nothing was wrong! She sat up and was about to awaken her family to share the joyful news when the earth shook again and the sparrows hushed their voices.

A short time later, though, she knew for certain that the shocks that had followed the two great earthquakes had lessened in frequency and intensity. She looked at the sky—a pale blue winter sky—on that morning of December eighteenth, 1811, and murmured, “Thank you.”
